Moving to Shafter

Located about 18 miles northwest of Bakersfield, the small city of Shafter, CA started out with humble beginnings as a Santa Fe Railroad loading dock. Named after a U.S. General who commanded troops during the Spanish-American War in Cuba, the area was incorporated back in the year 1938. It has since grown slowly into a comfortable and quiet community.

The Shafter population houses around 18,400 people with a median age of about 27 years old, making it a younger part of town. It is home to a largely Hispanic population with more than 81% of the people in the area coming from Latino origins.

Are you interested in moving to Shafter? Mentors Moving & Storage has been serving the city of Bakersfield and its surrounding areas as the best Shafter moving company around. Our top-rated moving services cover every aspect of the process whether you’re relocating a residence or a business.

Located in Kern County, Shafter neighborhoods offer some of the most affordable living options in the Bakersfield metro area. From Myricks Corner on the northeast side of town to Flight Park at the southeast, you’ll find great places to live all over the city. Other great communities are available in North Shafter, Smith Corner, and along Thomas Lane.

Once you’re living in the area and are looking for things to do in Shafter, the Minter Field Air Museum should be the first place on your list. If you’re looking for a fun activity for kids who like creepy crawlies, a trip to the Insectlore Bugseum is a great spot for hands-on experiences. You’ll also find enjoyable places close by like the Bakersfield Escape Room if you’re willing to make the short drive into town.

Shafter schools are part of multiple school districts including Richland Union, Maple, and Kern Union. Schools for young students and pre-teens include Golden Oak Elementary, Sequoia Elementary, Maple Elementary, and Richland Junior High. The city also hosts two high schools: Shafter High and Central Valley High.

Although the area’s median household income is lower than the U.S. average, you’ll still find a number of good Shafter jobs to choose from. Some of the city’s largest employers are Formica, Paramount Farming, and the Cemex Corporation. There are also large distribution centers in town for both Target and America’s Tire.

While it is one of the warmer, drier parts of California during the summer, Shafter weather is still comfortable and enjoyable for most of the year. Summer highs occasionally reach temps in the 100s, but lows drop to the mid-60s in the evenings. Winters bring cooler averages between the mid-30s and upper 50s, with about 7 inches of rain annually.
